A seminar held on 25th November 1998 – the last in the series of seven seminars on Equality and the Modern Economy. Professor Amartya Sen discussed a number of issues concerning the relationship of the individual to society and to a larger world. Taking the view that one should judge the progress of a society in terms of the freedom of the individuals in that society, he considered some of its differing implications for Asia, the US and Europe. He then argued for the importance of seeing the internal heterogeneity of each culture as well as the differences between cultures. Responding to his address, Diane Coyle raised further questions concerning the relationship of social justice and social inclusion to economic efficiency.
