A seminar held on 11th July 2000, at which Chris Smith outlined his view of the future of public service broadcasting. He explained why broadcasting could not simply be left to the market, distinguishing five sources of benefit associated with the concept of public service – an impartial news service, the educational role, cultural access, the economic benefits of a showcase for creative industries and talent, and the social benefits that come from an enhanced appreciation and understanding of Britain’s rich diversity.
