Labour Market flexibility was the theme of this seminar which had contributions from Adair Turner (Vice Chairman, Merrill Lynch Europe Holdings), David Smith (The Sunday Times) and John Monks (Secretary General, TUC). Adair Turner gave a detailed analysis of the key economic and labour market differences between the US and Europe and concluded that there is more than one model which can deliver high and stable levels of employment. David Smith followed and argued that the inflexibilities in the European economy could lead to 50 years of stagnation. John Monks concluded the debate by questioning the success of the flexible US model and pointed to the social costs of this approach, whilst highlighting the social benefits of the ‘European Model’.
