Reports research undertaken at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies and directed at (a) identifying obstacles in childhood to successful entry to the labour market in adult life, using data from the 1958 and 1970 birth cohort studies, and (b) determining the effect of labour market change on the impact of these obstacles between 1974 and 1986 when the respondents were first able to leave school. The research records the persistence, over the 1970s and 1980s, of underachievement by children in underprivileged families and adds to the evidence that children currently in the most disadvantaged circumstances may repay remedial interventions. The report has a foreword by Yvette Cooper MP, Minister for Public Health.
