A seminar held on 15th December 1999, at which the main speaker was Larry Summers, then Secretary of the US Treasury. He reviewed the progress of the US economy over the previous decade and reflected on three questions: how to keep it going, the challenges of inequality and insecurity that it presents, and the international dimension of these challenges. His discussion ranged over the role of the financial markets, the sources of growing inequality, the supply shocks stemming from information technology and capital costs, the benefits to equality of a tight labour market, welfare reform and the impact of domestic pressures on the quality of US international engagement.
