Report of a two day conference held on 11th and 12th November 1999, organised jointly by the US-based Center for Policy Alternatives in association, the Smith Institute and the Cabinet Office Women’s Unit. Speakers from the US and UK included Linda Tarr-Whelan, Rt. Hon. Baroness Jay, Rt. Hon. Patricia Hewitt MP, Senator Chellie Pingree, Ann Grinstead, Jackie Brierton, Donna Klein, Jessica Elgood, Yolanda Moses and Teresa Rees, while the closing address was given by Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown MP. The subject for the first half of the conference was ‘Making an Enterprise Economy Work’, and for the second half, ‘Security for Women in the New Economy’. Topics included the scope for women-owned businesses, the larger role of women within the economy, the implications of new technology, the problems of returning to work, career advancement, the work-life balance, childcare and women’s priorities generally.
